Zone 3-4 Gardening

Gardening up here in Minneapolis is so different than gardening down in Arizona!!!
The soil is soft and rich.  Digging is a breeze!  You can just about drop anything on the ground and it will grow.

I am also learning patience is a key in growing perennials.

I go through our basement "junk" to come up with great ideas for garden containment.  This chair is one that my father-in-law had worked on refinishing, but never got to it.

 HOSTAS: my pride and joy!
It has taken over 3 years to finally see the lush results!

My Hubby's garden row.  I say it's my Hubby's because he planted these about 2 years ago and he's very proud of his work!  I spread cocoa bean mulch around these hostas and day lilies, and if only you could smell the sweet chocolate aroma...Mmm good!

At this time I'm learning and planning on what I need to plant in the ground for next spring/summer, before we go back to Arizona.  So much to do, so little time...

Keeping Cool

The month of July started out pretty warm and muggy!
After spending time in the garden, mostly pulling weeds and creating more flower beds, I needed something cool to refresh me!

So far my favorite summer drinks are:

Arnold Palmers,

Blood Orange Mimosas (mostly on Sundays),

Spicy Bloody Mary's (sometimes for lunch),
and

Lately, my favorite summer drink - Cape Cods!!!

Summer Splendor Doily

This is my very first round crochet project ever!
I had attempted to make round doilies before, but was never successful.  My tension was too tight and the project would turn into a bowl instead of a flat round doily.  Live and learn...don't give up...carry on!!!
pattern can be found here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/summer-splendor
Little by little I'm making our summer home cozy.  I kid my husband that eventually he and the pets will be wearing a doily soon, as this craft has been my latest addiction!
This 3-legged round little table needed a doily.

Here's a close-up of finished doily.  It wasn't very hard to do and the instructions were easy to follow.
Ravelry has a great source of free doily patterns.  This free pattern is called Summer Splendor.

Crochet Dishcloths

When I first arrived in Minneapolis at the end of April, it was very cold and snowy!  My plans upon arriving here, was to start working in our flower garden, but Mother Nature had other plans.
So to keep me busy, I started to crochet something that was easy and a quick project.  My sister-in-law is an avid knitter, and knew she would probably have tons of leftover yarn she could spare.  She went through her stash and brought me several different colors of cotton thread.
These are a few of the different dishcloth patterns I made.

Flower Power Dishcloths

I don't remember the name of this pattern... :-(

This dishcloth was so easy and fast to make.  The pattern didn't have a name.

Single Crochet 8 Point Round Dishcloth.

My sister Veronica is in the process of buying her very own house, and has already placed an order of dishcloths.  She plans to decorate her kitchen in red.  So off to the yarn store I go...

So far...

So far I think I finally have adjusted to the life of a retiree.

It really took me sometime to get the hang of it!  Not only that, I had to get myself acclimated to a new summer location.  I'm not complaining, but it does take me a while to get used to new surroundings, environments and changes in life.

I'm well rested, relaxed and have finally learn not to constantly be checking the time.

Since my arrival to Minnesota, I have learned to line dance (sort of...who knew it was so hard!), crochet and more crochet, learning to garden in zone 3, home repairs or maintenance, reading, catching up on movies, antiquing, hitting garage sales, "roughing it" at the cabin (literally), etc...and of course taking loads of pictures of this little guy
Jack & the Pea

Also, I finally got my blogging mojo BACK!

Stay positive & enjoy everyday!
