Pink End of Summer Blossoms

  Pink Phlox
I can always count on the phlox to come through in our garden.
They seem to be the work horse blooming plant in our garden, ...
...towards the end of the summer.

Twice in less than a week, I have been surprised and blessed by kind giving people.

About 3 years ago, I had stopped at a garage sale and bought some bricks to use to edge around flower beds in our garden.  Milda, garage lady, shared that she would eventually be getting rid of more bricks and pavers, and asked me if I was interested in getting more.  So we exchanged contact information.

And out of the blue she gave me a call!  I was really surprised that after all this time she would remember me!
 Her call was timed perfectly!

Last year I put together this patio in our backyard, and that's as far as it got.  I kept thinking that maybe if I added more pavers, it would be more comfortably spacious to entertain at least 2 more people besides us.
So Milda and I scheduled a day I could stop by her place and pick up the pavers and bricks.  It took me 2 round trips to her place to pick them all up.
I came home and placed them around existing patio.  I still have to finish up this project though.  I need to get some sand so I can level all new pavers and not trip over them.  Also add more plants around area and spruce it up a bit.

I'll be honest, I haven't been too motivated to go out and garden this summer.  I simply can't get myself to go out there and get my fingers dirty.  Maybe once the weather turns more fallish like, I'll push myself out there and prepare the garden for the upcoming spring.

These two events made me think how lucky I am that people I've come across in my life, would take the time to even think of me.  I appreciate their selfless generosity and thoughtfulness.
I must pay it forward!

Shiny Copper

I love surprises!!!
My brother-in-law and his wife Jan stopped by 2 days ago and brought some goodies for me/us.
They're currently remodeling/updating their home, and replacing some of their old stuff.
Old for them...NEW to me.
I received 2 copper teakettles and 1 copper coffee pot.  Jan displayed these pots in a vignette above her kitchen cupboards and I always admired them.

I got busy and cleaned them as much as I could to a shiny new life.
I soaked them in vinegar and scrubbed them with lemon wedges dipped in salt;  rinsed and dried.
And for now found a new place to display them.
I love gifts like these where I can give new life to them!

Have a wonderful day!!!

iPhone Crochet Cover

I apologize for the horrible pictures.  Hubby took them with his ancient flip phone.
With nothing to do and browsing through Pinterest, I came across super cute crochet cell phone covers.  So I put myself to the test, and...
...made 2 iPhone covers for my phone!
The one in ecru was my first one.  It's a little tight, but it has stretch some and fits perfectly on my phone.  The yellow one was second attempt, and of course fits so much better.
I find out that my phone is protected while in my purse from scratches.
It was simple to make and actually pretty easy.
I simply made it up as I  crochet along.  I made sure I measure around phone as I was working on cover.  As a finishing touch I added some tiny flowers to make it even cuter!

PS: I'm currently working on written pattern for this cover.  I will post as soon as I finish.

Have a wonderful day!!!

Cat Video Festival

Well...there's always a first for everything!

A couple of weeks ago I was invited to an Internet Cat Video Festival presented by the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.  I didn't get the whole scoop of what this event was all about... when I got there it was totally unexpected.  I thought I was going to a museum to see great art photography about felines.
Nope...this was the Walker Art Center 4th annual sold out funny internet cat video festival at the Saints' new baseball field in St. Paul.

To my surprise the place was packed with cat lover fans!!!  Halfway through the video presentation I thought to myself, "What am I doing here?  This is so lame...even though I'm a cat lover!?!"
I had seen most of the videos presented on YouTube and FaceBook.  I'll admit there were some I had not seen, and the ones I had seen were either very funny or super adorable!
The die hard cat fans were dress to the 9's in their cat homage...from makeup to jewelry.

 Sisters from another mother.
Fortunately for me, this event was made very pleasant by my quirky friends!!!

 Who knew...
This was too funny!  Jokingly I had asked if Garfield would be a guest of honor, and to every one's surprise, he was!!!
All in all it was a very pleasant evening.  This is something I would have never ever considered doing.

PS: Lesson learned!  I will make sure I get all of the event's information prior to showing up!!!

Pinkish Flowers

During the peony blooming season, I just couldn't keep up with the flowers.  I had peony flower bouquets throughout the house.
I just find peonies so utterly beautiful!
I spy more pink on the hutch!  I just didn't realize how pretty that little white creamer with its pink handle is!
More pinkish peonies in a small cranberry vase.
I miss their scent throughout our home.
Which reminds me that I need to get out in the garden and get my fingers dirty by digging up the peonies, divide and replant them...not one of my favorite tasks!!!

PhDs vs WIPs

PhDs vs WIPs
Projects half Done vs Works In Progress

It seems that just about everybody is expecting the arrival of the stork!
So I thought to myself...wouldn't it be nice if I would get a head start and start making some crochet baby blankets!  That way when the baby arrives I have their blanket ready.

Well...that was a nice thought, but running out of yarn on the middle of a crochet project, procrastination, interruptions and other projects got in the way!!!
Not only that, every time I would go to the yarn store to buy more yarn to finish the projects, I would come home with a different color or type of yarn.  Is this a sign of senility, ADD,...???  Argh...!!!

I have set myself a goal to finish all 4 of these baby blankets in 2 weeks time...yikes!!!  I can do it...I can do it...I can do it...
So off to the yarn shop I go, and this time I'm taking all of these PhDs with me so I can get the right yarn.  Once I get home with yarn in tow these baby blankets will become WIPs!

PS: must get yarn for a girly baby blanket

Have a wonderful day!!!

August Pocket Letter

I am having way too much fun creating and mailing out Pocket Letters.  I have decided to have just one Pocket Letter Pal that I can communicate with on a monthly basis.
My Pen Pal's name is Larissa from Germany, and this is my first PL sent to her.  Larissa received it yesterday.  Our theme for our very first PL to each other is "Where we live".  I created 9 ATC's about MN.
This is the back of the PL with all of the required elements: tea, About Me, Questions tag, quote, ...
I crochet the red and yellow flowers, and also added a tiny crochet heart to the tiny paperclip.  I included the following goodies as well: American coins, washi tape, tags, embellished paperclips, stickers, ephemera, a glass heart magnet, blue sequins, a Peanuts comic strip (Charles Schultz = Minnesotan), and her initial and ...
...and most importantly included was my handwritten letter.
Some little extras in a pocket.
I was so happy and relieved to know that Larissa received it in less than a week.  I had read so many negative stories about international mailing, that I really didn't think this PL would get to Larissa; but not to fear...the US Postal Service to the rescue...even though the postal sales lady was a little grumpy...LOL!!!

Have a wonderful day!!!

My First Customer

Judy ~A Place to Gather~ was so kind to place an order of my little crochet coasters!!!

I've never thought of selling my handmade goods, but Judy's encouraging words are making me really think hard about venturing into a possible little business of my own.
I finished Judy's set of coasters in blue.  I also included a couple of little extras for her: dishcloth/washcloth, tag, handmade cards.
Judy hasn't been blogging lately, but is always visiting and leaving really nice and encouraging comments.
Thank you Judy and hope to meet you soon this coming fall when I'm back in town.

Have a wonderful day!!!

Mug Cozies

There's nothing better than to crochet or read on a rainy cool day...and stay in my pj's!!!
Last night I crochet a set of 4 coffee or tea mug cozies from cotton yarn.  These cozies are perfect to keep my beverage of choice hot, and also to protect my hands from the heat while I hold my hot mug.
They were so easy and simple to make.  I used the same pattern I used for my coffee or water cup cozies here.  I just tweaked it a bit by adding extra stitches for length of mug. I crochet a chain loop to hook over buttons, and single crochet all around the edge as a finishing touch.
I'm even thinking of adding a cute crochet pumpkin applique on cozy for added charm!

Have a wonderful day!!!

Take me out to the ballgame...

Out and about on a Sunday afternoon!
Hubby and I were invited by his brother Chip and sister-in-law Jan to a Twins ballgame yesterday at Target Field!

Hubby and I have plan on doing something fun and different every weekend in the Cities.  We are to take the city bus & train to our destinations.  So far it has been a great way to get around and the trips are a very pleasant experience.

I love this photo of us!

Partners in crime!!! Jan and I had a blast!
We won!!!

I can't wait to see what Hubs and I get to do next week!

Crochet Coffee Cozies

For the last couple of weeks I have been working on making several crochet coffee sleeve cozies out of worsted yarn.  I think that this kind of yarn is perfect for hot beverages.
I even appliqued a crochet heart on each cozy!
I did a little research on Ravelry and Pinterest for cozy patterns, and then I set myself to kind of create my own.  Super easy to make!
This is my version:
  • Chain 12; half-double crochet on third chain and half-double crochet to end.  Turn, chain 1 and half-double crochet on same stitch; 9 half-double crochet to end.  Repeat for 22 rows.  I measure around cup to make sure it will fit around.
  • From here you can decide if you want to add edge on bottom of cozy, and then crochet to close cozy, and finally add top crochet edge or other edge of your choice.  I use same yarn from beginning to end.  I cut off yarn once I'm all done with cozy.

I used leftover yarn from my stash, but now I'm ready to buy different colors of yarn...I kind of get bored using the same color yarn over and over...but then I'll run into same cycle...and no matter what, I'll end up with more yarn!!!
I used Salt for the Spirit's heart pattern.
After using one of my worsted yarn cozy for my iced water bottle during some humid days, I found out it would be better to make some using cotton yarn.  Cotton yarn will definitely absorb the sweaty cup moisture.  This is the beginning of it and still working on it.
I think these cozies will make great little stocking stuffers for Christmas!

Have a wonderful day!!!

Crochet Button Flowers

I recently saw this kind of crochet button flower embellishments and I thought how clever and cute!  They can be used to make paperclip bookmarks, embellished cards, for Pocket Letters, tags and so many more other uses.
So I sat down and put myself to the task to learn how to create them, and made several in different colors, patterns and styles.

I used real buttons in different sizes from my collection: 2-hole and 4-hole buttons; new & old.  I used Craft & Fun picture tutorial and it was super easy to follow (the instructions are in Italian).  Once I learned the basic first round, I tweaked it where I made some changes.  Also I made up crochet flowers and for others I used crochet flower patterns I found on Ravelry.
  • for the 4-hole button I added 2 stitches in one-hole, and on the next hole I did one stitch, and repeated it once more
  • for the 2-hole button I did 3 stitches on each one-hole (I did this so that the stitches would look more even in the center & not off)
  • I added or subtracted chains between stitches around button (depending on the size of button)

As a finishing touch I sewed a smaller button or bead to center of each flower.
Now on to the next project...use these flowers in projects.

Have a wonderful day!!!
